Opening statements are expected to begin in a few hours in the trial of the
man accused of killing Danielle van Dam. David Westerfield is charged with
murder, kidnapping and possession of child pornography. He's accused of
abducting the 7-year-old girl, who lived just two doors from his Sabre Springs
home, and dumping her body near remote Dehesa. Danielle's father ... Damon van
Dam ... may be called to testify later today.

A man is hospitalized in fair condition this morning after being shot by
National City police. Details regarding the 2 A-M shooting near Highland
Avenue and 18th Street are sketchy. A U-C-S-D Medical Center nursing
supervisor says the man was shot in the stomach.

Meanwhile ... a San Diego police officer who was shot while off-duty is
recovering at Mercy Hospital. Officials say Officer Abel Monzon called for
help from a Burger King restaurant in Chula Vista around 10 last night. He
suffered a gunshot wound to his right side ... but officials say he's in
stable condition. Investigators believe the shooting occurred several miles
away in San Diego ... but it's not clear what led to the shooting.

Federal agents are checking records at scuba diving schools in San Diego
and nationwide following reports that terrorists may try to carry out an
underwater attack. F-B-I agents reportedly are checking the names of diving
students against the names of suspected terrorists. Officials say the probe is
in response to non-specific reports of possible future terrorist attacks.

Expect mostly sunny skies today with high temperatures at the coast in the
mid-60s and 70s. Inland ... temperatures will be in the mid-70s and upper 80s.
